Hitler famously taxed them out of every single possession they had, and the guards managed to steal the rest as they tried to leave. It's called "reparations". Most of the jews that state in Germany couldn't leave, because it's quite difficult to leave with no outside connections, no cash on hand, no knowledge of other languages, and the clothes on your back. But that's just the German ones.

Polish jews weren't given such an option.
