Stalker is a game built upon its jank, its very engine is mystical nonsense that nobody can wrangle or make sense of. All its broken or cruel mechanics are part of the enduring charm. Just getting it to run is part of the experience.
Remastering it in any way just turns it into another forgettable game the likes of which there are dozens better since it came out. This is why the sequel was forgotten faster than light.
To top that off with turning one of the most Russian games possible, a literal cornerstone of why the Slavic gaming industry exists, into a political stance against it is the most tonedeaf thing possible. Especially given that the Ukie war is losing favor fast, so this type of action isn't guaranteed applause like it was a few years ago.
the source code for it was leaked so you can follow how it works sort of well.
I'm no coder, but I think there is a big difference between being able to look under the hood and fully able to modify and make something work. The Coconut in Team Fortress 2 is a famous example, that afaik people still don't know exactly why it breaks the game.
