Then the English friends are posting about how Afghanistan being a terrible place and sending people back is a terrible thing. Meanwhile South Africa is a great place and no evil horrible thing is happening.

Basically it's like the 'long march' in China just not commie: You escape encirclement, retreat to a more defensible position, build up your strength as your enemy fuck up and kill each other then storm back and take over when the native population would rather have YOU in charge than their current government.
