The scenes they stitched together for their short are from around halfway through the first episode. Between the getting bullied and confrontation, the two of them discuss it and her position is that he'll make it worse. She's initially pissed about him not listening to her. Then immediately after what's in the short, she realizes that she appreciated his intervention and thanks him for it instead.

Her getting over her self-isolation and being something besides stoic are literally her character arc. It's the character flaw she deals with and this was the first step.
