The point of such sentences is to provide a very public display of punishment that serves to scare the everloving shit out of the rest of the criminally inclined population(read: low IQ, violent and impulsive niggers). They don't understand abstract ideas such as prison but a physical punishment is simple enough that they might be able to understand the implications and not want to end up like their fellow ilk.

A healthy reaction would not to be rage baited, and to move on and make positive and affirmative steps to make the world a better place around you with a sense of love, discipline, and justice in your heart.

Justice requires meting out harsh consequences for vile behavior. No amount of Love and Peace is going to deter the wicked. Failing to dole out said consequences because you want to sit in a circle and sing kumbaya is just cowardice and abandoning responsibility.

Understand the kind of scum you're dealing with and select an appropriate punishment. Not everyone is going to be corrected by a stern lecture and a timeout.
