What you’re seeing is what occurred in pre feminist history where “women can do anything men can, no exceptions or caveats and gender roles are sexist”. In western societies this has been jammed down our throats that gender roles are evil and must not exist. Asia does not have that same level or exposure to feminism and still utilizes gender roles from their traditional perspective (though this is being avidly attacked by western feminists). In the case of Naoto she wants to be a detective like the males in her lineage so she believes she must become a man to make that reality. There’s no sexual component to it or a “need to be a man” in a physical sense (western societies wouldn’t be able to do this because again gender norms must be destroyed). The desire is purely one of wanting to be in the other gender role, not to be the other gender in itself (Again deemed heretical by western woke). She’s not gay or trans, she’s taking a title to achieve a means beyond a sexual or narcissistic desire. This falls apart eventually (as it does in the west but we double down on it and keep it going in perpetuity) and she realizes she doesn’t need to be in a male role to be herself, in fact she’s causing herself pain by keeping up the persona because it’s limiting her in her other desires that are feminine.
