I don't think it would have. These sites were losing money even in 2014, and GG was basically a way of maintaining their hegemony over access journalism against YouTubers.
That failed and they never adapted.
I think they need a kind of pay-walled high-quality investigative journalism to look into the details of how these games are developing and with good, long-form, analysis. They'd have to then mix that in by doing interviews with gaming video sites like Side Scrollers and the like.
