I think a decent chunk of white people viewed Chauvin as a sacrificial lamb. They thought if we just threw the book at this one dude, everyone would see that we whites are on their side. Surely, finally, this would be the end of racism. But so many blacks behaved so badly in the wake of George Floyd that a fair number of white people have been forced to recognize the reality of anti-whiteness. It’s like we burned one of our own at the stake in order to stave off further aggression, but it turns out there’s no limit to anti-white hatred. No amount of deference will ever dissuade these people from attacking you.
