I was just listening to a podcast that talked about them. Apparently, they have a bunch of churches in Africa that find their whole position so distasteful they actually want to leave the group, but the UMC wants to keep them in the fold for the diversity points, so they wont 'let' them leave.
i mean...the individual members and such could leave, but they'd probably have to build their own church. somebody mentioned holding the cost of the church building themselves ransom.

This happens in the US too - UMC traps churches who want to leave with “Sure thing, your building costs $23M, pay up” type moves.
I can believe it.

That sounds exactly like what a bunch of upper-middle-class progressive white Americans would do.
