Likely for anonymity's sake and not any troon shit. GrapheneOS is a privacy- and security-focused Android ROM that draws some angry attention from governments, so I would bet the dev team is keeping things ambiguous on purpose.
However, they're an incredibly talented security researcher and engineer and it would be extraordinarily misguided to send them to front line combat. This seems to be understood now.
They have way more faith in that regime's competency and long-term focus than I do. Here's hoping he does manage to avoid that pointless meat grinder though.
