It is possible but most likely it was racially motivated. The fact that the father claimed it wasn't was a lie or a highly likely lie, you don't risk sin for the guy who killed your son.
I don't think it was a lie from the father, just likely he didn't want to believe that it was, and didn't want his son's murder to become a racial issue.
Not wanting to believe it is not the same as saying something to be true but I'm definitely not one to judge, still have the plank in my eye. I just found it very odd behavior and made me question if he was or wasn't a Christian.
