There's also fans of Stalin who claim that Russia ended the war in Japan, not the Bomb! 😋🙄
That is idiotic of course. Japan had already written off their continental holdings & snuck all the good troops and equipment to defend their Home Islands. They had a good 50-100% more troops & aircraft than the highest Allied estimates of 1945.
Russia had NO amphibious capacity anywhere, even less in the Pacific. Defenders say "They had 100,000 paratroopers to land anywhere in Japan!" No they did not. Their aircraft did not have enough range to reach anywhere but a small part of Japan. They also had no long-range fighter escorts. Japan had 2,000+ combat aircraft & would have shot half the invasion force down at a minimum. No tanks or artillery in meaningful numbers, I'd give the paratroopers 4 days even if they all made it to the landing zone. They'd be slaughtered.
The Allied plan for invading the southern island, Olympic, had 42 carriers, 26 battleships and 400 escorts. They'd land 700,000 men in total (over the course of 4-5 days) with some tanks and lots of trucks, jeeps and artillery too. They had no idea how extensive Japan's defense of that beach was. They expected 100K dead and 400K wounded for the entire "Downfall" & capture of Japan. They'd have taken that just from Olympic, minimum.
