Universities are an environment and where academics compete for funding. There is limited funding, and those that are most successful at getting $$ for their project get to continue with their careers.

They have been slowly and steadily extending their influence and cultivating allies as they are promoted up the food chain within universities. It is to the point where Socialism is the dominant political paradigm for university professors in some fields.
Now these professors have designed our university programs, hired the teaching staff and picked who passes and fails their classes for more than ten years. The graduates of these programs have taken over any number of fields. Look at the state of psychology and counseling in Canada / USA, Or HR specialists, who write the hiring criteria and training for new jobs in industry.
It is to the point where Socialism is the dominant political paradigm for university professors in some fields.
Unfortunately that has been the case for a very long time now. Long before CCP became competent enough to leverage any sort of influence on the world stage.
But there is a group massively overrepresented amongst communist movements. Look up the early life section of the leadership of the failed German communist revolution or the Russian revolution. Look up which ethnicity dominated the early Soviet governments. Maybe look up Israel Epstein too.
Also maybe take a closer look at Hollywood who've been at the forefront of pushing communist propaganda since the beginning. BlackRock is interesting too. And by the way which ethnicity is the most overrepresented in US universities?
