The UK government wanted Apple to make a backdoor into one of their encrypted services so they could snoop on anyone, including none British.
Apple instead pulled the service for the UK ALONE basically showing they'd rather tell the entire UK they can't use their product than allow the UK government to spy inside their systems.

Thank god. I think there probably wouldn't be much time before public backlash caused that to go crazy.
