A long time ago manual typewriters would look like that for some letters due to the way the keys would strike the paper on the roll. Especially if you were cheap and just used an ink ribbon long after it was useful.
It was fixed for the electric typewriter as just pressing the keys now was sufficient enough to make the key strike exactly like it did every other time due to the electric system taking over and making every strike uniform.
