Sadly, Spain hardly did any better during the "Golden Age". Despite being basically the richest nation on the planet they pissed away every last penny on pointless wars that ultimately amounted to Spain gaining nothing. They lost every last colony, all the richest trading ports, basically everything. The Habsburg Spanish Monarchy was run by actual literal retarded inbreeds, and Spain ended up fading so much into irrelevance that people barely remember that it's part of European politics anymore, and you only hear about it when people are talking about vacations.

Even the most "based" Spain ever was, under Franco, they were a cuckold nation. There's a reason the Allies never went west to 'liberate' Spain, because Franco was happy to beg Germany for aid in the civil war, only to then take power and declare Spain neutral.
