I don't think they should ever have included a black, just because of how out of place they are, but it would be possible to authentically portray an African leader of this period in an interesting way. It would shake a lot of liberal assumptions, however, like blacks owning black slaves, which is probably why they didn't do it.
And like most African Studies majors, he cannot differentiate between Africa and the Middle East.
Because the majority of Musa's character and dialogue would work for an Arab traveling around, including his historical existence in the area. It would still be ideologically driven, but it would make more sense.
Instead they go full We Wuz Kangz and make an Arab in the body of a Sub Saharan African to steal all the accomplishments and relative greatness of those Empires of the time.
