Not sure why the people pointing out you can get a car for cheaper are getting downvoted...although some of the tone is annoying, I'll admit. Also, I'm guessing they haven't looked at car prices in a while, as the trend is certainly going in the wrong direction. But you can still get a car for well under 5K. For now.
But both can be true: The economy is shit, we've largely lost the American Dream, people should be able to afford houses and nicer cars if they're working decent jobs full time. We're all getting screwed.
But it's also true...you can buy a car that works well for under 5K. Admittedly, it's getting harder and harder, and we're all getting squeezed. But older Japanese cars are still affordable and reliable. A quick look in my area is showing me '98-'05 Hondas for 2k-3k. Now, a while back that would have been like 1k-2k so, again, the trend is going the wrong direction.
Also, some of those ads were deeply insulting, and they're not even hiding that these cars are for the Poors. Stuff like 'work for four months and you can have a car,' and 'basic transportation,' and 'have a job and 600 dollars, you can get a car!'
Yuck. But, again, possible. And these cars will run forever. To be clear again, that doesn't excuse that we should have better options, and would have in the past. This doesn't excuse our absolutely crap economy. This doesn't excuse what the elites and their corruption have done to the dollar. It doesn't excuse any of that. But you can get a car for significantly under 5K.
New cars are underpowered shitboxes with tacked-on turbochargers so car manufacturers can game their Corporate Average Fuel Economy numbers. They're made for the government first, customer last.

Honestly I predict the older cars are going to end up going for more because they won't have all the nonsense of the newer ones.
