'll stop reciting all of these. But it's interesting that the judge has read so many. (He's still going.) What I'm finding, based on the last ten cases, is that mischief of this sort almost never yields a jail term. Including Antifa.
OK, now the judge is describing a Greenpeace stunt, 72 defendants, for breaking into the Calgary Tower. All discharged. So that's the rule for environmentalists. Is it different for truckers?
Another case: burning down a barn(!) Got a "sentencing circle", was "repentant" and was let go with no jail time. Holy mother of God. You burned down a barn and didn't get a day in jail. Let's see how it goes for truckers.
What I'm learning, from case after case, is that politically-motivated mischief in Canada pretty much never leads to time in jail, even if you're a professional eco-activist, even if you're Antifa, unless you go utterly berserk.
Next case. 2011 Stanley Cup riots in Vancouver. Laughed a cars being destroyed. Looted a store through a broken window, laughing. Sentence: no jail. In fact, the judge said media coverage was punishment enough.
Maybe the lesson here is, if you're going to be politically violent, do so in B.C. or Toronto, do so if you're Antifa, do so if you're an environmentalist, do so if you're Indigenous and can get a "sentencing circle". But don't do so if you're in Alberta, or if you're white.
I'll just note the fact the judge's name was Keith Yamauchi, for informational purposes only.
