He did beat his "adopted" kid, Gohan, with gusto but he was also extremely loyal and never abandoned him until he was outright killed. It's hard to tell why all sorts of different minorities like specific DBZ character so much. I think they just transcend race because of "cool factor."

Men don't go for the "muh representation" bullshit in anywhere near the numbers women do. Especially masculine men, the primary audience for DBZ.
