I'm willing to wait to see how this plays out before I pass any judgement.

I'm seeing that there are several options here:

he resigned his current congressional seat, but he's still the congressman-elect for the next seat, so he could very well just go back to congress.
Rubio's senate seat needs to be filled; DeSantis could grow a spine and appoint Gaetz there.
Kash Patel and Gen. Flynn still have not received appointments; either one of them could go to either the FBI director or AG spots and either one would be just as good as Gaetz.
