Their pre-Neo-Confucian society would be seen as gynocentric, given the men would marry into the woman's household.
Then there's centuries of being a "vassal" to China, giving tribute and what-not under threat of war, along with the threat of the Jurchens and Manchus.
Then there's the Japanese occupation of their nation after having a brief "Imperial" period that didn't go far, existing as a "protectorate" for nearly three decades.
Then there's the post-WWII split where two halves ended up in extreme opposite directions of each other due to US/China interference.
Yeah, I'd say they're very damaged.
