I'm surprised there aren't already bot farms faking Steam player counts hoping to fool people into thinking some woke garbage game has more people liking and playing it.
you can pump numbers all you like, the player count is revenue. if the revenue doesn't match the player count, something is off and you get investigated for fraud.
in the case of steam games, a game has to be bought or gifted in order for the player count to be affected. either you buy your own game 10,000 times and waste that money, or you gift your own game 10,000 times which is totally traceable and guarantees a fraud conviction.
