Being seen as “fighting oppression” seems to be so trendy amongst young people

Always has. The entire 60s was a bunch of people pretending that pot and sex was "fighting oppression" and they were superheroes for doing it.

Same with all the race riots of the 90s, where black guys thought destroying random businesses and killing anyone they could would "somehow" un-beat Rodney King.
