It's kind of sad to think that Valve games once changed the landspace with every release. They were at the top of their game making absolutely fantastic games that others wished they could aspire to.
Now they're happy chasing 5+ year old fads with what appears to be middle of the road attempts at genre collision.
The people who like MOBAs and the people who like hero shooters just can't possibly be a huge overlap. And like you mentioned, they're already entrenched in their favorite titles. Beside the fact that something similar to this has already been tried by Epic Games and failed.
If they do switch, it'll be to see what this is like, then go straight back to what they prefer. Whether that's Deadlock or not remains to be seen.
The goal of all software companies is to become a rent-seeking parasite. Valve accomplished this goal with the 30% cut from Steam. Same with Apple, same with Adobe.
Hell, it's not just software. John Deere installs DRM on their tractors, making it impossible to repair on your own. McDonald's makes most of their money charging rent on their franchisees. Disney vociferously defends its IP so it can keep receiving royalties from licenses.
Hell, that’s basically the goal of every industry these days, at the top. They don’t want to cure your low insulin levels, they want you to take one of their injections 3 times a day until you die. They don’t want you to own physical media of any kind, they want you subbed and auto-renewing so that your kids are paying the Netflix bill a decade after you’ve died to diabetes.
I think I heard Bret Weinstein go on about this topic well, back on JRE or somewhere like that. Rent seeking and game theory and how they’ve led to our modern shitshow
Yeah, same, people act sometimes like I'm completely obsessed with being right and I'm not because I'm always predicting worse case scenarios lol. I could potentially see myself playing a game like that because it's a shooter and that's more my thing for multiplayer, if it's good, but I don't get how this will be any different to every other hero shooter out there.
These days though I'm looking for true gameplay value and I'm not interested in a game that's all about grinding loot crates or skins. If you put a gun to my head and made me choose a modern title to play I would probably pick something like Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 or Manor Lords.
I think we'll know Valve has truly fallen if they start pumping out content and the women are all fugly.

I'll happily be wrong, though.
I don't think Valve has been a game development company for a long while now.

Once you see this shit, it's everywhere.
