I would assume it's an issue of scale.
Your average woman has never actually met a model train enthusiast.
Also model trains are a physical hobby. Time spent on model trains is a limited slink-away-to-the-man-cave activity.
Gaming is ubiquitous and takes place in the living room, office and everywhere out in the open on your phone.
Agreed, I'm pretty sure a couple of their bird-brained shows used it as a shorthand visual for a 'troubled relationship'. The only positive example I can think of a model train enthusiast being shown off the top of my head is bubbles
