As someone who knows the original inside and out to the point I softlocked myself out of the finishing the GBC remake: It does come up several times in minor points of the story, and there were several female only and a few male only items. Later remakes added even more male/female only gear.
I remember one town where you get to play monarch for a day. Nothing really happens when you're king, but as queen the local inn will advertise you stayed a night on a plaque.
