I’d say there’s a difference between throwing your sins into a chicken and a living thinking being bearing the weight of your sins.

Maybe, but one is clearly an outgrowth of the other. The Jews at the time slaughtered lambs for forgiveness of sins, and Jesus is portrayed as the Passover lamb.
