of all the sins that Disney Star Wars has, I've learned to give Star Wars in general a pass when it comes to space physics. I would be more concerned with the terrible retcons, but at this point I have ascended into not caring.

This is not the same kind of problem as WWII dogfight mechanics in space.

Star Wars has had fiery explosions in space since the beginning. the first prequel movie had a fire in the shield generator of a star ship when it got shot. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gfMoXBOjWBM

atmospheric physics in space is just part of star wars's suspension of disbelief.

Still not even the same problem. A whole scene constructed around fire suppression in space is a completely different challenge to suspension of disbelief from a 1-second shot of a fire that's vaguely merged with a spaceship's departure from the atmosphere. Suspension of disbelief depends on audience perception, not on analyzed laws of physics of a fictional universe.
