Not quite related but I just want to bitch. I’m a certified public accountant (CPA). I work in auditing. There was a very common term in this field “segregation of duties.” It meant that you couldn’t have one person doing everything and needed to split up responsibility for, say, ordering inventory, receiving inventory, and counting inventory, so that way there’d be checks and balances in the organization. It seems that because “segregation” existed and offends people, the field has moved to using “separation of duties” even though “segregation of duties” was never about racism. Since it shared it word, it became guilty by association. Here’s the thing: “separation” and “segregation” are NOT the exact same word. Segregation means separating into independent functional groups (remember “separate but equal?”). So when you segregated duties it was among roughly comparable positions (managers, supervisors, etc.). You didn’t just grab the janitor and tell him “hey, now you have to do account reconciliations.” But hey, anything to not appear racist to people too stupid to know that words have meanings, right?
