If you punish shifts in both directions then nobody has an incentive to lean towards you.

Absolutely this. This is the entire reason we plead with creators to not do woke shit in their popular stuff- the only people it actually appeals to do not support your industry to begin with, and the oversaturation of that shit is actively chasing away your biggest fans.

We can't become that and expect to be taken seriously.
