Tell me, is there any sort of work that could be considered noble or worthy that MUST operate in secret?

Priests in a communist country. We are seeing this more and more "in the West".

Any subversives in a communist country, for that matter, not just the priests. Even non-subversives, sometimes. Like farmers. They'd need to operate in secret sometimes in the USSR, for going against USSR farming regulations that would kill their entire crop, and starve their village. Operate in secret just to make sure no one dies of hunger.

True. My wife's family got sent to the Gulags for being farmers. Out of 8 children only one survived.
