I'm not gonna say anything new on gender in this forum, but I think the least desirable probably 30% or more of women just don't date. Something like that has to be the case to create the unbalance you see. There's nothing inherently wrong (in the sense of incorrect -- not a moral sense) with women who are spoiled for choice being picky.
The issue is that women's demands for standards in men are too high such that this leads to a reduction in demand by women for men which is causing the imbalance. The statistics on online dating show this. Men rate women /10 in a perfect normal bell curve as it should be. Women on the other hand rate men basically such that like 10% of men are 9-10/10 and 80% of men are <5 and 10% are inbetween 5-9. It's a fucked up exponential-like curve. And that's 5/10 women rating men like this. That's what's causing the imbalance. Women's perception of men is unrealistic.
It's female projection as usual. They treat dating like shopping and their "standards" reflect that.

ok but why now?
Social media and hollywood propaganda.
When people call Jason Mamoa not constantly cutting to get an 8-pack showing a 'Dad bod', you know shit's fucked.
I would argue social media and online dating are driving this.
