To be deeply cynical about this - depressed people, myself included, tend to be less “productive” than others. Thus, we don’t “contribute” as much to the current deeply rotten society, and I guess we also don’t consoom as much. At my most depressed, I kind of just “existed” for a while, and society really doesn’t like that…
So I suppose by killing off the depressed and otherwise mentally ill, it makes more room for those who don’t question things, and who just go about their lives, plodding along in their “careers” and making money for corporate..?
But honestly I’m not sure. There are definitely plenty of people who see the depressed (again, myself included) as a “burden” on society, so… I suppose state-sanctioned voluntary euthanasia plays into that.
Futurama took this to its ultimate end with the suicide booths, and Bender, in an early episode.
Honestly, it’s kind of crazy to think that we’re probably closer to that then we will ever be to something like… Space elevators, or whatever.
I am diagnosed with a "working" or non destructive depression also. I find the notion of "euthanasing" people like us dangerous. Even worse when it is done to minors like in Canada iirc. No one should be murdered by the state for depression. I get it if you have severe permanent pain, maybe a week to live due to cancer etc. Depression and other neurological stuff will have people misdiagnosed way more and cause needless death in the near future, calling it now.
