If you punish speech that isn't causing an immediate threat to life and limb you're not a democracy. It doesn't matter how you government is structured or what your other laws say.
That is literally the hallmark of an oppressive regime.
I'm not seeing the inconsistency. Why couldn't a democracy be an oppressive regime? All democracy means is everyone gets to vote. I don't even think we've reached the true depths of democratic tyranny yet.
If only that was true things wouldn't have ended up like this, instead democracy is just a pretense for the government to do whatever it wants while the common man takes the blame for the decisions.
The problem with "hate" speech laws is that they aren't actually banning hate speech, they're banning true speech. The hateful people are allowed to say whatever they want like: "your children should be taken from you because you refuse to transition their gender." See, that's hate speech and should be punishable. What they call hate speech isn't actually hate speech.
Some of the most vitriolic stuff I have seen from what someone has said hasn't come from that person saying something hateful, it's from that person saying an uncomfortable truth. The challenging of someone's core belief as a lie, a myth, a confidence trick - that is what causes them offence.
Hate speech laws are ghey.
Let me put it more elegantly.
Thomas Paine
You know what is truly ironic? Any future UK hate speech, online safety or intranet laws will likely be lobbied by someone whose surname is "Ghey".

Cue that saying about democracy being two wolves and a sheep voting about what to have for dinner.
"Gang rape is a democratic process."
Damn, that's apt.
