There's some kind of profound irony to the guy who wrote just about the tropiest harem bait around being the one to show up and make something so important like this happen.
Watsuki was fined 200,000¥ (barely more than 1300$ now) for possession of CP. If Japanese law actually functions that way, they have their own set of issues. If not, then I question what he actually was in possession of.
Edit since you made one:
actual pedophile
...
convicted in court
Actual pedophiles that get convicted in court in first world societies get jailtime, or execution in some cases. Watsuki got a slap on the wrist for something that is supposedly a serious offense. The Japanese must have different definitions of CP than we do.
I'm kind of with you here, especially after seeing the paucity of details available in English.
As morally uncomfortable as it is to come to this guys' defense even in a hypothetical 'devil's advocate' manner, a wiser mind than those of our bandwagon woke-scold enemies will recall that, often, "The devil is in the details."

It looks like you already researched the case, but that is absolutely true too, for some definition of CP. I have talked to Japanese people about this (various demographics, not just creepy otaku) and they often didn't understand why we consider someone having nude pictures they didn't create as on the same level as production of CP or child rape. I sometimes try to explain the slippery slope, how just participating in the groups that circulate that shit fuels supply, or how people who assault children are always found with CP - but I'm not gonna try to change their culture. Every country has its own peculiarities. (Japan will harshly punish people who distribute any porn without the mosaic.)
I'm more concerned with the woke clown world stuff in the west, or places like France that ban paternity tests.
I still don't like the man's work, but his principled stance on this has been consistent enough to respect and I absolutely wish him all the work.
Came here to say this.

Negima is my favorite manga, despite not liking fanservice.
Better than the reverse: Making a great series, and the creator is an actual pedophile.
Rurouni Kenshin, anyone?
Edit: Five downvotes. Why did this trigger people? It's a factual statement--the man was convicted in court.

Ah Fuck, news to me...but you have my thanks for bringing it to my attention.
