One of the reasons why WWI was so terrible was that most wars were short and rare in Europe so no one expected it to erupt so badly.

The Kaiser told his departing troops in August 1914 "You will be home before the leaves fall!"

And the Brits were told they'd be done by/home for Christmas, so neither was expecting more than a few months, although comparatively it does seem some expected it to be shorter than others.
