Sorry, didn't mean to overstate, nothing concrete to link to direct marketing but the hype and exposure and just the formulaic coverage it has been getting by steamers, and how obviously they are glossing over and avoiding complaining about game breaking bugs like boss encounters falling through the map floor, just leaves me judging it more likely than not that this is being streamed as a business transaction than for fun.
Ah, okay, we should be specific I agree, like you I think it seems almost artificial the way it's blown up like this, I wouldn't be shocked if this really was the case. I think a lot of the games industry has realised now paying off games journalists does bugger all for marketing since most people are watching streamers and youtubers for their info.
Oh it's live so they can't help but run into the glitches, it's just when they try super hard to make jokes out of even the lame bugs, or ones who aren't usually shy about bitching or criticizing mechanics exclusively brush off broken boss fights and lost pets.
They're professionals so they can act natural whilst doing it, but you see it very occasionally in collaborations where one of them is like "ixnay el itchbay, I can't talk about that bro" when the other starts tearing into a game too much. Like full on Jonah Hill neck-chop meme mode. They can fuck around a bit, but they just can't be outright negative when there's an active business relationship there. It's also easier to see the pattern when you're aware which ones share the same agencies and which ones don't.
But TBH, I don't habitually watch streams live, I'll just skim VODs from a bunch of them for specific games of interest or to keep a finger on the scene, so my character judgements may just be off from low exposure.
Nah you're 100% right, people know that I sometimes hate watch Fresh & Fit for lolcow style entertainment. They're exactly the same type where they maintain this thin veil of professionalism but that podcast has been on an absolute death spiral lately and even their long term subscribers have been calling them out. They responded allegedly by banning tons of people off chat among other things and have been clamping down or paywalling content that people actually watched.
It is relevant because I find it interesting how fast these weirdos have fake persona's they clearly adopt for the public and it usually drops the second they get any pushback from their core audience or they have some kind of issue with somebody who shows up as a guest. I mean that Jack Murphy incident was a prime example of outright persona fakery. Obviously not all the streamers are going to be like that and total fakes but I find it all fascinating from a psychological perspective. Funny how this shit is all happening within gaming streamer circles too.
They're good at gaslighting some of their audience, but they can't fool the autists, I have to wander if that's part of why they target younger viewers with their shit constantly which makes me really dislike them.

It's definitely astroturfed.
You're not watching the right streamers, then.
Seeing all the jank and server issues they run into is half the fun.
