You know it's bad when a normie like Asmongold can't say a fucking thing LOL, also this justifies my hatred of dubs, yes, I'm one of those language elitists.
I think it speaks more that the great dubs (FMA Brotherhood, Black Lagoon etc) I can stay in single digits but the terrible dubs I'm into the triple digits.
I can't fucking stand dubs overall, it's like they are just reading lines out and not acting them whenever I hear it. I hadn't understood this before, but I realised that the 'American' voice actors are putting on these weird 'cutesy' voices that simply don't sound normal I know the Japanese female VAs do it a bit but they've at least clearly practiced it properly as professionals rather than whatever the hell I'm listening to with the dubs. Since I have pretty sensitive hearing actually I find that very grating, don't know how everyone else can praise dubs because of it.
Look, maybe it's just me, but mid to late 20s californian woman is a very noticeable accent. It's also a very punchable accent. This only becomes worse if they try to do a cutesy anime voice on top of that. Also, they all sound the exact same as each other.
It is not a good voice for a Japanese high school girl. Or any character you don't want me to instantly hate.
Yes! That's it, it's that fucking western coastal elite accent you can only find from that particular region of America and when they try to act cute it's so fucking annoying I'm so glad it's not just me that's noticed that LOL. I couldn't put my finger on it but other people who commented on dubs never seemed to even mention it.
This is also one of those problems that gets a bit noticeable with english VAs in general because sometimes the studios all hire them with the exact same accents and from the same region.
I tend to think most dubs arent that bad, but will also admit that I am in the minority.
Also, I dont think saying "dub bad" helps here, because I have seen more than a few times where they changed the subtitle version. And when people pointed out that issue, some of these ass-munch little shits said "Guess you should learn Japanese if you dont like it then, Chud."
I am just so shocked the Japanese are kicking these people to the curb and saying "Nah, we are going to have bots do it because it is better than the gaijin doing it."
The problem with dubs is there's a HUGE discrepancy in quality compared to Japanese VAs.
Put this way, this is god tier voice work, this is great and this is above average. The better actress in the last one for the blonde chick is multilingual and VAs the same character in the original Japanese.
It shouldn't feel like a standout when an English VA puts some passion behind their lines meanwhile in the original versions you sometimes swear that the VAs are suffering traumatic experiences for their parts (remembers Goblin Slayer).
I agree subs can be just as bad at times but sometimes they seem to get some digs in to, think it was In another world with my smartphone that had a line saying she'd rather have a closeted pervert than a feminist for a master because the former can control themselves.
I feel like there is a growing resentment of foreigners messing with their culture in Japan, they can identify the ones that truly love their culture and they're happy with them (I notice YouTubers like Chris Broad get a pass easily) but that idiot they have locked up is showing they're done with the rest now, regardless of the US forcing the legislature to change laws.
Dont get me wrong, I am absolutely agreeing that there is a huge discrepancy. I am probably have just been lucky in that most I have listened to for dubs have actually been at least good. There are plenty I still watch sub over dub (like you said, Goblin Slayer is much better in Japanese). It is just that on average I will take dub over sub because I would rather be watching what is going on instead of trying to read the subtitles. Sometimes stuff didnt get a dub, or sometimes the dub is an absolute trainwreck, and I will watch subs then. But if there seems to be no real difference in quality to me (like Rising of the Shield Hero), then I will take dub.
Just for my own example, Kayuga-sama I think is better as dub than sub, but a lot of the changes in tone and extra lines on the part of the narrator were changes signed off on by the studio so it is still staying true to the vision (and the over the top nature fits the anime more, IMO).
I feel like there is a growing resentment of foreigners messing with their culture in Japan,
Fully agree on this one though. I know that most Japanese are still OK with Americans and still love it, as well as loving America itself (I recently saw some clips of a few Japanese Hololive Vtubers who went to vacation in LA and said how they loved it there and liked how open and friendly Americans were, even if they thought it seemed kind of dangerous at night). But that is because most Americans like Japan for being Japan. Ironically, it is the "We are totally not racist" Woke Twitter Freaks who are the most anti-Japanese. But that tracks since they are anti-everything that doesnt live up to their California Bay Area sensibilities.
