The ONLY good thing Tumblr did was be containment. It's a shame we didn't go full SCP and have a nuke ready for when containment was breached...
I'll be honest, I don't know whether or not them spreading after the porn ban was good or bad in the long term. It's annoying as fuck dealing with them EVERYWHERE but although they were contained they were in a bubble and feedback loop that made them more cult like as time progressed, at least when they hit the normies they were seen more and more as the freaks they were.
The worst Gamergate did was make one group that was apolitical heavily anti establishment more than they already were.
Funny you should mention SCP, that's where a lot of Tumblr rejects seemed to reconvene. Which is just bizarre, the Foundation represents just about everything they claim to be against.
Unfortunately I know they do, there's a point, I think after the 3000 or 5000 series where a lot of it becomes shit, you'll have the odd good ones here and there like this one but it becomes bombarded with 'it's just misunderstood, we're the baddies' crap than the previous 'the Foundation does fucked up things but they are LITERALLY stopping reality from being destroyed'
It's the same thing with 40k and anyone that tries to excuse Chaos.
I liked the old one about the monster that looks like a little girl who would immediately kill people with anything it can get it's hands on, one researcher was appalled at the way the Foundation treated it, and the department heads used the security footage of the researcher offering the thing clothes as an example for new recruits.
Chaos corruption always starts with legitimate grievances but pushes them more and more towards the extreme until you end up destroying everything you initially cared about. All the fallen Primarchs had good reasons for falling... mostly. Angron was just rabid dog and Lorgar was a toady.
There's no such thing as a "containment forum" and there never has been. You have to relentlessly ban those kinds of people and keep them from ever networking and reinforcing each other.
That's why I pondered if it was good of not they were mostly relegated to Tumblr for a long time.
Elon's purchase of Twitter though, has shown me that you're best off doing what you're saying but when they are contaminated like Facebook, getting a beachhead then relentlessly pushing them into obscurity
I honestly have no idea how you clean things up or if it's even possible to clean up the mold once it sets in. I know leftist sites and social networks like Bluesky do an extremely thorough job of keeping any groups with opposing politics from setting up through a combination of highly active jannies and extremely radicalized userbases. I'd hope we're not stuck in a world where two sides using tranny terrorism tactics on each other is the only outcome but maybe there's no going back.

I personally think the genie is out of the bottle as far as the internet goes. As long as the elites hold a vested interest in controlling and dividing us, they will prop up places like Facebook and Reddit in order to let these leftist freakazoids congregate and radicalize in order to harass and destroy their enemies.
There is no going back to the way things were. Conservatives are going to have to adapt to the new times, because we can no longer simply "mind our own business". These people will never leave us alone, as their ideology demands a foe to battle. When they vanquish that foe, they will move on to a new one, until everything is destroyed. We probably won't survive long enough to see what happens once they've exhausted their supply of White enemies, but it would not surprise me in the slightest if they start going after the next lightest skinned race.
It wasn't just containment, though - as Tumblr became more extreme it became easier to identify the crazy - "you don't want to act like a tumblrina, do you?"
I think the value of this is under-appreciated, because with that as a reference point it was easier to convince more sensible places to guard against their lunacy, rather than leaving the doors wide open to it.

Chaos needs no excuse.

Think my favourite ones were 953 because this shape-shifting fox demon had an existential crisis thanks to a furry conversation
And 5001 in that we fucked with something that nearly ended us and only because an orbital railgun strike stunned it could it be re-contained.
I mean, Horus did nothing wrong? Always thought chaos was cool, just not as cool as Eldar.
