He's characterising these things as inherently good, but that is only true if you are already competent.

I know plenty of homeless crackheads who are "courteous" when asking for change. I know plenty of people who would give me the shirt off their back, if they hadn't already given it away. These people are not producing a net good for themselves or anyone around them.

None of this stuff matters until you are able to stand up for and take care of yourself. That's what he's attacking here.
