Hymen checking happens in America, and it happens, at least, that send the girls overseas to have whatever FGM done. If not have it done by a witch doctor here. Not everyone can afford to send the girls to Sudan or whatever.
My ex in-laws got asylum here getting away from FGM. If it's happening here that would ruin the whole point.
I can't speak for the case of your ex-in-laws, but it happens. Mainly they send girls back to another country.
