For comparison this means that in a generation Japan's population will drop to 2/3 what it was, but S.Korea's will crater to 40%

This new generation of 40 = 20 couples = 16 children.

The minimum fertility index for population maintenance without war or disaster is 2.1. ( slightly more males are born, some people die before reproducing, or are sterile, so it can't be 2.0 ).
