I have sympathy for the Palestinians. At the same time, if that was somehow a European population, they'd make much better living conditions.
I'm thinking in particular of the Palestinians smashing the infrastructure the Israeli settlers left behind when they vacated Gaza.
What would you do? It's not sympathy when you haven't lived in those conditions. It's pretty shitty, even by mideast standards.
Why do you call them shitty people lol? Cause they are sand people?
Huh? You're thinking of empathy. You empathize with someone when you've felt the same emotion before.
This is the wrong place to lodge reddit objections to semantics. Having said that, I don't think they're terrible people.
I wouldn't have smashed the greenhouses the Israelis left behind in Gaza.

Did a diversity hire do that writeup for Merriam Webster? Their own supporting examples don't make sense:
Surely the humanitarians aren't expected to "share" the feelings of the strangers they're helping?
If "sympathy" is already feeling what other people feel, why is "understanding" them separate?
Sympathy is, put bluntly, feeling sorry for people.
