I don't remember ever thinking about the middle east in college, nor did I see any protests about it. Maybe they were just quiet years? (00-04ish FWIW)
I do remember people protesting for and against the Dalai Lama. It was all Free Tibet and shit. Not free Palestine. There were pro-democracy Chinese and pro-Chicom Chinese
The demographics of the grad students were entirely foreign with Chinese making up the majority. The undergrads, which I was, weren't like that. At least half of them were from in-state, since the Uni has in theory an obligation to serve the state that gives it money. But none of these wanted to go to grad school at the same place, I guess. Tbf it did seem like a thankless job.
Anyways, the Chinese in school were Chicoms, and they faced off against whatever local chinese fled communism and people from neighboring countries that had problems with the Chicoms.
To the point, one might ask when the Palestinians and Arabs came. Feels like they're all over, but most Arabs in the US are Christians. Whereas I feel like it's Muslims pulling for Palestinians. I think we have a shitload more Pakis than actual Arab Muslims.
