Beijing has police with AKs everywhere. It actually felt pretty safe if you were following rules and being respectful.

Safe like from being enriched by local diversity. I felt more safe walking downtown Beijing at night than any US city I’ve been to.

Homeless and scholars man; China has the former but seemingly keeps them in check.
