Perhaps I'm using the wrong term, but since the U.S. Army and Marines switched to semi/burst from semi/auto with the M16A2 and its descendants, I assumed they knew what they were doing.
The rate of fire of an M4 fired semi auto is more than sufficient for suppressive fire. You can empty a thirty round mag in about four seconds if you're actually trying to. At no point is a genuine M249 the sole means of suppressing fire.
You've clearly never fired a burst fire rifle.

They switched a long time ago. No one uses it. The fire selector might as well not exist.
