Perhaps I'm using the wrong term, but since the U.S. Army and Marines switched to semi/burst from semi/auto with the M16A2 and its descendants, I assumed they knew what they were doing.
It's called suppressive fire in the absence of a true machine gun. The 3 round burst is roughly analogous, mag wise, to the five round "die motherfucker die" of suppressive fire from a machine gun.
No OnE uSeS iT. Army has the saw. Civilians don't. I swear to god you fucks play call of duty and read other nerds on the internet circlejerking and think you're experts.
The rate of fire of an M4 fired semi auto is more than sufficient for suppressive fire. You can empty a thirty round mag in about four seconds if you're actually trying to. At no point is a genuine M249 the sole means of suppressing fire.

Never assumed the U.S military knows what it is doing.
They switched a long time ago. No one uses it. The fire selector might as well not exist.

For one or two people maybe. Otherwise no, experience says otherwise.
