They stood by a friend. They shouldn’t apologize for that. Just say “we’re disappointed to learn this is the kind of person he was.” But to apologize for doing that is just disgusting.
They wrote a letter of support for a friend who was charged with rape. Why? Apparently, they think they are So Important that we need to know that they like this fellow.

I partially agree. Clearly, they're only apologizing for the wrong reasons, but they should never have done it to begin with.

It was a character witness letter written to sway the judge's decision.

Not if they believed he was guilty. On the other hand they personally don't have any way to know what really happened, and may believe that being 20 years later he is a changed man now. And these are probably bleeding heart liberals who want to abolish the prison system. If they were actually being consistent (not that I'd expect it) they would be soft on crime with their own friend too.
They're such hypocrites, because when people wrote a letter like that against the totally unfounded claims against Kavanaugh, they mocked it as "WELL HE NEVER RAPED ME".
They're not claiming 'innocent until proven guilty', they're defending their friend. And I assume not everything that Ashton Kutcher does not witness did not happen.

It's something that the people behind this aren't hiding that it's literally an accusation of witchcraft.
Once you're accused your friends are supposed to immediately abandon you.
Banana Republic is an understatement to describe this.

Innocent until proven guilty?
Because they weren't eyewitnesses to any rape and had no reason to believe that the person who they know as a friend would do such a thing?
