When more information came out, he openly and publicly retracted his words and apologized. The entire length of time he'd talked about the event before being sued, if you put it back to back, couldn't have been much more than 5 minutes. It was a blip under the radar.
And then he's made to pay an absolutely outrageous fee for something he'd already retracted and apologized about years prior, when his statements had basically no long term impact whatsoever.
